If you have been a “long” time reader of this blog you know I have posted little to none in the last month. This isn’t because I’ve had nothing to write about because there is always something to write about on a business/tech “blog”. So why haven’t I been writing? The answer is simple. As I’ve said before 90% of my time was being spent to earn <10% of my earnings from this site. This didn’t make sense so I decided to take a break from writing articles and spend 100% of my time on other projects. And I have to say it’s paid off.

Becaus I prioritized, Instead of being just another blogger, I….

own a successful forum and am an expert in my niche

Have a varied portfolio of sites that earn steady income

Am developing a serious piece of industrial software

And thats just what I’ve been doing on the computer, not including university and offline projects. So I really can’t stress it enough. If you are trying to start a business or just trying to make money online, sit down at a desk and write down all your business idea and then write a step by step plan to launch. And then DO IT! Reading books, blogs or magazine are helpful but only to spark your ideas. No one is going to do it for you, thats your responsibility. Of course people will provide help along the way if you ask properly just don’t expect them to do it for you.

Thats my rant and I hope if you came here looking for some secret make money idea you’ll take the advice in this post.

P.S. You will begin to see constant updates here.

One of the things you should be worried or at least focused on when writing anything albeit a blog post or a company memo is readability. For business’ if your employees can’t understand what you want them to do because your memos are unreadable, that will cause a noticeable decrease in productivity. If you’re a blogger and you write the most informative post ever, its essentially pointless if no one can read it.

The Subjective Viewpoint

It is often times difficult to determine if something one writes is readable, for what makes sense in my head may often make no sense to anyone else when I put it into words. The best solution is to have at least two people read all your writings before you distribute them. A colleague to make sure you have no faults within the actual content and someone not from your field to determine if its easily comprehendable.

The Objective Viewpoint

Of course you don’t always have two people available to review everything you write and reviews from people are often times subjective and while its important to get a subject view on something, it always helps to get the objective stance as well. And that is where Gunning,Fog and Flesch come into play. They are readability algorithims. And with all algorithims there are scripts to easily take advantage of them. The script I use is provided by JuicyStudio and its very easy to use. You just type in your url and press enter.

Click Here to Test your sites readability

Results for DigitalORDER

What Does That All Mean?

The bottom three numbers are the ones you should pay attention to, The Flesch Grade and Fog Index are a rough determination of how many years of school it takes to understand the content. Below is a table of Fog Index’s and what resources should have that index. The Flesch Reading Ease is a 0-100 measure of how easy your content is to read, According to JuicyStudio you should shoot towards at least 60-70 so Im quite proud of having a 72.85.

Fog Index

Disclaimer: These are mathematical formulae and should be used as tools to help you determine where you are at not tell you how you should write, for if you wrote simply to get a good score ,youd end up with a nonsensical string of text.

Today is a momentous day for DigitalORDER, we have now had 1000 and counting spam comments made on this blog and not one of them has gotten through thanks to Akismet. Though some of them were pretty creative even written in verse.

If you dont know what aksimet is, It is a plugin that is now integrated into Wordpress and was created by fellow Houstonian and wordpress founder Matt Mullenweg (You know the guy at the top of the default blogroll). The purpose of this plugin is to eliminate comment and trackback spam so the blogger doesnt have to spend all their time filtering through the comments to find those that arent spam.

Web masters for to long have had a bad overall physcial stereotype, When people think webmaster they don’t think of Adonis no they think of a pale skinny white boy in a dark room with bug eyed glasses. The sad thing is though this isn’t the case for everyone, a lot of webmasters do practice pretty bad health habits and part of it is because of the type of work they do. Being healthy isnt just for people who care about their looks, the better health habits you have when your young means more time to spend the millions you made when your older. So here are a few tips to become not only a healthier person now but also so you don’t burn yourself out and can continue to master the web for many long years.

1.Cut Back on Soda/Coffee/Energy drinks.- too much caffeine can kill and cause health complications. Also If you are a recovering soda addict, it’d be a good idea to invest in some enamel building toothpaste or mouthwash cause soda does major damage to teeth.

2.Use LCD screens not Tubes-that flickering kills the eyes

3.Drink Juice/Water- Juice is a healthy substitute to caffeine drinks and even though your inside all day you can still suffer from dehydration, in fact most people suffer from chronic dehydration.

4.Use a wrist rest and shake out your wrist every 30 minutes or so- RSI injuries can make typing a lot harder so take measures to prevent them.

5.Eat 3 Full sit down meals- this gives your mind a break and keeps you eating right

6.Light your workspace properly - if possible use as much natural light as you can. The goal is to get the entire room evenly lit without it being glaringly bright.

7.Set a bed time- Sure you can get a lot done working all through the night but its no way to continually create quality work. Plus if your bed time is in line with your circadian rhythm you sleep better, I know when I’m in University I feel great sleeping 12-5 but during the summer I don’t stick to that routine and I feel like shit on 5 hours of sleep.

8.Exercise EVERY day- Most of the time webmastering is done sitting in a chair, so its very easy to get out of shape so every time you wake up just do a few push ups, sit-ups and stretch. You don’t have to kill yourself by doing a 3 mile run (you’ll love yourself if you do) but you’ll be amazed how better you feel from just doing a tiny bit of exercise every day.

9.Sit properly- Sitting all day can be very detrimental to your spine so if you can afford it buy an ergonomic chair that you find comfortable and keep your feet perpendicular to your spine.

10.Don’t Stress Yourself out- This may seem small but a lot of health problems are stress related and its too easy to get stressed out working on line. This can be done in two parts prepare for disaster (i.e. backup everything) and don’t focus on the problem when disaster does happen, focus on the solution. Or as the Dalai Lama says “If a problem can be solved there is no use worrying about it. If it can’t be solved, worrying will do no good. “

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor(yet) and all medical/dental advice in this post is given as my personal opinion. Personal health is a very important issue and you should consult your personal doctor with any questions or health issues you are experiencing.

First off let me apologize ahead of time , while I dont plan to post less in fact I should be posting more after I get into my university routing but if I do post less the reason is Fall Semester is about to start and I’ve got to get ready ie move, shop, re-learn everything from last year. I wont post much about my studies here since this is a webmaster/business/money blog and my degree plan is Pre-Med with minors in physics/philosophy/mathematics. If you’re interested in that type of stuff I post a few of my writings here.

Anyways on to stuff that is important and relevant to you the webmaster. The beginning of the school year is of great importance to alot of webmasters. Take for example a proxy website, during the summer months proxy owners scrounge to afford their servers while when school starts they are working to keep their servers up from the onslaught of traffic. Everyone trying to make money online should be taking advantage of each new season especially when that season starts off with parents spending gobs of money on their kids. How you take advantage depends on your website or specialty but think How can you make money off school starting? Dont tell me or anyone else and put your plan into action quick before school shopping dies down.

Also in my web browsing I found probally the most thorough post about making money online its by a guy named Mark who guest posted it on jonwaraas’s blog.

Its been one month since Ive started webmastering for money,Ive been doing it as a hobby for 4 years, and heres the breakdown. I’ve built 3 proxies, 1 diretory, 2 forums, 5 blogs and a few miscalaneous sites. I’ve advertised by Pay-Per-Click, Search Engine Optimisiation and Link Exchange. Ive tried out a ton of different ways to monetize each site from CPC to Affiliates. After all this, Ive learned a lot about how to be successful on the web and more importantly what not to do.
