In my post about this blog being the blog of the month, I mentioned that DigitalOrder made $330 dollars last month and I enticed yall to try and find the ads that made me that money. Since the only guess’ I recieved were the obvious ads, Adsense and CJ banners, that actually didn’t make money, I decided to do a post on my “secret” source of income. Hint:Its not really a secret its commonsense.

The Tail
Because of how a blog works, After only a few months of blogging you end up with a long string of posts on a variety subjects. Sadly, alot of blogs previous posts or tails go to waste never to be seen again. Though hopefully after reading this you’ll show off your tail and use it to increase conversions.

How to use your Tail?
To use your blogs tail it requires a mix of SEO, Comment links, Affiliates and redirects.

1. SEO-On the seo side you should be using a plugin like All-In-One Seo to make WP a bit more seo friendly by noindexing the archives, tags, categories. This will not only rank your homepage a bit better in the google index but will also help to index your previous posts for there keywords as well.

2.Linking- I know this is hard but for each post try to get at least one or two linkbacks to the post page for the keyword(s) it covers. Just linking to your back posts from within other posts will help with this as long as you dont ping your self and have All in one SEO installed correctly.

3. Affiliates- The key to monetizing the tail posts is with a good affiliate program. My favorite is Commision Junction because most of the name brands use them but there are other good networks like azoogle or share-a-sale and to properly monetize your tail you will probally end up using multiple affiliate programs depending on the specific content of the post i.e. if the post is about Apple Computers you would need to use cj to get the affiliate link as thats the network apple uses.

4.Redirects- Alot of blogs focus their monetization efforts primarily on the front page or sidebar, posting ads general to the blogs subject but to make money off your previous posts you will need to place the relevant affiliate links you gained in step 3 into the post itself, more so than you would with the posts on the front page. But because SEO is very important you can’t just place naked affiliate links so mask all your affiliate links with redirects.

Stats
You should of course be using an ad program like Analytics that tells you what keywords people reaching your site are searching for and which posts of yours they are lead to. If you are keeping track of those type of stats you should be able to use the above steps to monetize your tails traffic.

Conclusion:As you see, not much of a secret, but important and profitable just the same. So get to monetizing your tail.

Im a huge proponent of not only writing stuff that my audience will find useful but also only advertising products my audience has a need for. One of the ads too many people display to the wrong crowd is firefox referalls. Its not a matter of too many sites advertise Firefox as its a wonderful browser but the fact that I see all these “use firefox ads” while using Firefox. It is so unbelievablely easy to fix this problem that you have no excuse not to use this tip.

How do you only display to Internet Explorer users?

All you need to do is use an <!- -[if IE]>/<![endif]- -> statement where you want the ad to display and place your FF ad in between the statement.

Heres the one I use for the header of this site.

<!- -[if IE]>
<div class=”block”>
<script type=”text/javascript”><!- -
google_ad_client = “pub-ID”;
google_ad_width = 468;
google_ad_height = 60;
google_ad_format = “468×60_as_rimg”;
google_cpa_choice = “CAEQ2YuYhAIQABoIeXs4k3rVGB0o6bb3cyjptvdz”;
//- -></script>
<script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js”>
</script>
</div><![endif]- ->

It really is that simple, If you use Firefox trust me there is an ad in the header but if you dont believe me keep reading.

How can I check what my site in multiple browsers/OS’s?

You could run all the variations but I prefer to use BrowserShots.org, They allow you to test different OS’s, Browsers, Resolutions, Flash, javascript,java and colordepth.

Heres what Digitalorder looks like on all the different screens, look at request group 5.

NOTE: WP morphed my - - into –, so I had to put spaces to prevent that, be sure to remove them if you copy and paste.
I am very interested in how you use this tip, and if you have your own related tip, feel free to leave a comment.

I signed up with payperpost about a year ago but I havent done anything with my account because I was and am still against being paid to write about something. Though my qualms with the issue arent as big anymore now that I’ve learned more about how they work and that I can choose to be paid for products I would have written about for free.

Their Affiliate Program just makes Sense

The main reason I’m linking them is their unique referal program, they do have a program where they pay $10 per new referal but the set up I like is their “review my post” program. When someone clicks on this badge and signs up with PayPerPost, a special $7.50 opportunity is created asking them to write a post in their blog, reviewing a post on your blog, and when they complete the post about your post you both get paid $7.50. I dont know of a sweeter set up then getting paid for having others talk about your blog.

On top of their awesome referal program, they have a marketplace in which you can browse offers and get paid to write about them, I didn’t see any open offers that Id want to write about in my category but Im sure there are alot of very relevant offers in some of the entertainment categories, so if you do movie reviews or something similiar, check them out. They’ll give you $20 just for doing a blog review on them.

Random Requirement

Even though my blog had the stats to get accepted it was denied because I didnt have the standard archive as you can now see in my sidebar so if your going to try them out make sure you have a standard archive otherwise youll have to apply twice.

If you take advantage of one of their offers leave a comment and tell me how it worked out.

Im not sure what I think about the design itself but I am happy they are updating something as that means they are working on making it better and a plus they even said in email that they fixed the reporting problem permanently.

New Shiny Creatives

On top of the new site they added a New and Improved style of creative(see above). I think they look pretty and alot nicer though because they only come in three different widths and the same height there use is limited of course you can always customize the old style auctionads with css. As the purpose of ads is to make a site money, its not enough for an ad to be pretty so we’ll see how well they convert.

Note: On the above Ad I picked some pretty detailed and not so detailed keywords so we’ll see if they fixed the serving problem. If you se a listing that doesnt have to do with penguins, ninjas, cannons , leave a comment.
Heres the Official post on the upgrade.

What do yall think about the new designs?

Yesterday TLA changed their entire referal link structure and to some people who werent using redirects this could not only have forced them to go back and change alot of links but it could cause lost income if they missed a link, So todays post is about redirects or more specifically php redirects, the kind i like.

How to create a php redirect

All you need to do is copy the text below, replace three current links with your affiliate link and then upload the file to your server. Now instead of linking directly to the site, link to the php file you just made.

<html>
<head>
<title>Text Link Ads</title>
<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex,nofollow”>
<script>window.location=”http://tinyurl.com/3brydv”;</script>
<meta http-equiv=”refresh” content=”1; url=http://tinyurl.com/3brydv”>
</head>
<body>
<p align=”center”>You are being taken to the correct page.
<br>If the page does load after 5 seconds,
<a href=”http://tinyurl.com/3brydv”>click here</a>.</p>
</body>
</html>

More benefits to using redirects

There are many benefits to using redirects besides ease of changing your links when your affiliate has a brain fart and decides to use tinyurls. The main reason I use redirects and probally the most important is for SEO purposes. Before I used redirects everytime I placed an affiliate link it would count as an external link and that would not only hurt my pr but more importantly it would decrease my quality score in google adwords. But using redirects that use the nofollow parameter, all my affiliate links are counted as internal and I dont get a decreased quality score for having too many affiliate links on my page.

Other Techniques

If you use a different redirect technique and would like to do a guest post, please leave a comment or email me at kingjacob {at} gmail.com.

I’ve been asked a few times “what the best affiliate program is?” and I usually just tell them Commision Junction or Azoogle but now that I think about it the best affiliate program is the Guard Recruiters Assistance Program(GRAP). Now the requirements to be a member of this affiliate program are pretty hard, You actually have to be a member of the Army National Guard, so this program is pretty exclusive.

Now lets get into what exactly GRAP is. The Guard was missing their recruiting goals pretty badly so they decided to pay current members of the Guard for each person they recruit so instead of only having 1% of the Guard be recruiters they turned 100% of the Guard into recruiters. They aren’t just paying you a few dollars they pay you $2,000 for each person you get to sign up.

On top of the cash they also offer medical/dental benefits if you recruit a certain amount of people each month. So if your a good salesperson, this program could be for you.

Of course you have to join the ARNG to be eligible so if this is something you’re interested leave a comment or email me because the Guard is a sweet deal but recruiters dont always tell the truth.

Initially when I read about Agloco on John Chows blog, I thought “Bah, just another pyramid scheme” Though after checking their site and looking more into it, everything points to them being very much legit and I am liking what they’re trying to do, pay you for time you normally spend surfing the web.

According to their site, the way Agloco will work is a user signs up, downloads a viewbar and this viewbar will run related advertisements while you surf and then youll be paid a share of the revenue based on number of views and members referred. The viewbar according to their screenshot doesnt take up much space and if it works like they’re advertising it would be a nice way to make some extra cash so you can actually afford the arm and leg High-speed internet costs.

 Currently they are in a limited beta, which is a good sign that they know what they’re doing as scaling is always an issue with any new advertising network. But the limited beta also means the viewbar is being released in the order one signs up, so sign up quick so you can get the viewbar sooner and begin accumalting hours.

If you think this is just another pay to surf company, please read their blog cause these guys really know what they’re doing.

They also have a multi-tier referall system set up where you can earn from the hours of people you refer so heres my referall code is BBFX7916 and If you do decide to sign up, Id appreciate if you used it. Id also like to hear from anyone who has downloaded the viewbar as to how relevant the ads are for you.
