Today is a momentous day for DigitalORDER, we have now had 1000 and counting spam comments made on this blog and not one of them has gotten through thanks to Akismet. Though some of them were pretty creative even written in verse.
If you dont know what aksimet is, It is a plugin that is now integrated into Wordpress and was created by fellow Houstonian and wordpress founder Matt Mullenweg (You know the guy at the top of the default blogroll). The purpose of this plugin is to eliminate comment and trackback spam so the blogger doesnt have to spend all their time filtering through the comments to find those that arent spam.
I think Askimet is one of the most important and useful plugins ever. On one of my blogs it has caught 55.000 spam comments.
I’m thinking about going to it myself. I currently just have a captcha in place and have yet to receive the first spam comment, so I think the system that is currently in place works and I’m not sure about changing it.
yep. i have had quite a few spam comments caught. the thing i dont like about captcha is that it deters humans from commenting.
How does captcha deter people from commenting?
I also love Akismet, it would be impossible to keep a blog active without it.
As for captcha, a lot of people find them too cumbersome, annoying or simply do not understand how to use it, so they refrain from commenting.
